Abstract/ Overview
Jamhuri is a Swahili word for Republic. Jamhuri day is a national holiday in Kenya, celebrated on the 12th day of the month of December every year, to commemorate full independence from the British colonial powers in 1963 and becoming a republic. This day is recognized in Article 8 of the 2010 constitution of Kenya, as one of the national holidays. This day is one of Kenya’s most important holidays, as it serves as a reminder to the citizens of the immense and relentless sacrifices made by selfless compatriots, in the struggle for independence. Jamhuri day celebrations are full of pomp and colour, often featuring entertainment from musicians, comedians, dancers and military parades by the Kenyan armed forces. The main highlight of the celebration is the Presidential Speech which is delivered to the nation by the Head of State.
