Nyeri County Budget Review and Outlook Paper 2021

Abstract

The County Budget Review and Outlook Paper (CBROP), 2021, is prepared against a background of expected global and national economic recovery after a slump in 2020 occasioned by the negative effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Economic growth in the sub-Saharan Africa region is projected at 3.4 percent in 2021 from a contraction of 1.8 percent in 2020 due to improved exports and commodity prices, and the rollout of vaccination programmes. This growth will also be supported by a recovery in both private consumption and investment as economies re-open. However, the recent increase in infection rates in sub-Saharan Africa and limitation of Covid 19 vaccines are expected to weigh down the region’s recovery in 2022. In the year 2020, the Kenyan economy was adversely affected by the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic and the containment measures, which disrupted economic activities. Additionally, the country faced two other shocks: The invasion of swarms of desert locusts that damaged crops and floods following receipt of above normal rainfall in May 2020. As a result, economic growth slowed down in 2020.
