Abstract

The Government of Kenya recognizes the co-operative movement as a critical player in pursuit of social and economic development. The policy is anchored on the theme, "Promoting Co-operatives for Socio-Economic Transformation". The policy identifies contemporary challenges which inhibit the growth of co-operatives and presents a paradigm shift intended to establish a more proactive engagement between the national and county governments, the co-operative movement and other stakeholders. It also seeks to rationalize the role of national and county governments in co-operative development in line with the CoK, 2010 and national development goals set out in Kenya Vision 2030. The government affirms its commitment to uphold the sanctity of the co-operative values and principles as a way of enabling the growth of co-operative enterprises while ensuring that the interests of the general membership are safeguarded.
