Abstract/ Overview
Kenya has for many years been well renowned in world tourism and was originally the most developed and premier destination in sub-Saharan Africa. In recent years, the prime position has been overtaken due to competition from new contenders, in the Beach as well as the lucrative Wildlife Safari Market. For more than three decades, since the first statement of national tourism policy was formulated, there have been considerable changes on the political, economic and social fronts within the country. The above factors, coupled with increased concern for environmental protection, following the adoption of Agenda 21 for the Travel and Tourism Industry, have led to the need for revision and harmonisation of existing policies upon which the further development and diversification of the tourism sector of Kenya may be based.
