Abstract

The major national objectives in Kenya's development policy are food self-sufficiency, food security, employment creation, income generation, generation of foreign exchange earnings, rural-urban balance, and overall growth. In view of the rapid population growth and the increasing demand for food, food production and food security will remain key priorities in the agricultural sector. An economy based on agriculture, as is the case in Kenya, must allocate sufficient resources to its agricultural sector to ensure that national food security is achieved, through self-sufficiency in the production of basic food commodities and the generation of foreign exchange which can be used for the importation of other foods, and the occasional importation of basic food when the need arises...
