Abstract/ Overview
The Education Sector Disaster Management Policy 2017 emphasizes the Ministry of Education's commitment to providing quality education and delivering the post-2015 Education Agenda, which focuses on global sustainable development. The right to education is enshrined in the 2010 Constitution of Kenya, and the Ministry strives to ensure a learner-friendly school environment with minimal hazards. However, disasters such as fires, floods, and epidemics can disrupt education gains and pose a threat to learner safety. A comprehensive disaster risk reduction initiative is crucial to ensuring the safety of learners, infrastructure, and instructional materials. The Education Disaster Management Policy emphasizes the need for a coordinated effort by the education sector, development partners, county governments, volunteers, and private agencies in the management of disasters to save lives, protect school property, and ensure learners' access to education in a safe and secure environment.
