Abstract/ Overview
Provision of food and nutrition security to all residents in the County remains to be one critical mandate of the government. The future of the County depends on a healthy population and an economy that is resilient to the effects of climate change, global swings in food prices, and the effects of emerging pests and diseases. Such risks threaten the welfare and livelihoods of many people in the County and destabilize the economy at large. Agricultural transformation is critical to growing the economy, reducing the cost of food, alleviating poverty and therefore delivering 100% food and nutrition security. This therefore calls for prioritization of Sector projects to ensure vibrant, commercial and modern agricultural sector that sustainably supports the County’s economic development and national priorities. In the last 10 years, the County Government invested eleven percent (11%) of the total revenue in various projects and programmes. With this investment, the Sector has managed to increase maize production from 1.8 million bags in 2014 to 2.8 million bags per year in 2020, Increased milk production through the One Cow Initiative and Artificial Insemination programme, enhanced fish farming through development of fish farming infrastructure and revamped the cooperative movement in the County.
