Abstract/ Overview
Kitui County has various climate change impacts attributed to hazards such as drought, environmental degradation, livestock diseases, crop pests and diseases, human wildlife conflicts, human diseases and social risks. These have immense impacts, affecting the economic and human developments of people in rural and urban areas. These impacts disproportionately affect vulnerable populations such as the elderly, poor, and minorities. Section 13 of the Climate Change Act, 2016 provides for the development of National Climate Change Action Plans (NCCAPs); the development of specific county climate change actions plans to prescribe measures and mechanisms to mainstream adaptation and mitigation actions into sector functions of the National and County Governments. In identifying climate change risks and hazards communities are required to be engaged through a well-structured and meaningful participatory approach. Participatory Climate Risk Assessment approach was used to establish climate change risks affecting the Kitui County communities and subsequently used to inform the development of this action plan. The plan outlines goals, strategies, and actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy efficiency, and increase resilience in the face of a changing climate. The plan also includes public engagement, education, and outreach efforts to ensure broad community support and participation in climate action.
