Abstract/ Overview
Climate change is the most serious global challenge of our time. The 2010 National Climate Change Response Strategy (NCCRS) recognised the importance of climate change impacts for Kenya’s development. This National Climate Change Action Plan developed in 2012 is the logical next step to enable Kenya to reduce vulnerability to climate change and to improve our country’s ability to take advantage of the opportunities that climate change offers. The Action plan is the result of a year-long, participatory process involving the public sector, the private sector, academia and civil society, under the leadership of the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources guided by a multi-stakeholder, multidisciplinary taskforce. Kenya Vision 2030 – the long-term development blueprint for the country – aims to transform Kenya into “a newly industrialising, middle-income country providing a high quality of life to all its citizens in a clean and secure environment.”6 A low carbon climate resilient development pathway, as set out in this National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP), can help meet Vision 2030’s goals through actions that address both sustainable development and climate change. This pathway can also help the Government achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and other internationally agreed development goals without compromising the environment and the natural resource base.
